Why Dunn’s River Is Sandals’ Best Food Resort

Of all 17 Sandals resorts, Sandals Dunn’s River has the strongest dining program in the entire Sandals collection. That’s not a marketing line — it’s the consistent feedback I get from clients who’ve stayed at multiple Sandals resorts and from my own meals at every Dunn’s River restaurant.

Three reasons:

  1. The resort opened in May 2023 after a complete rebuild — meaning the restaurants are the newest in the Sandals portfolio with the most modern kitchens, the freshest design, and culinary teams hired specifically for this property.
  2. There are 12 restaurants on-property, plus full exchange privileges with neighboring Sandals Ochi (16 more restaurants). Stay at Dunn’s River and you have access to 28 restaurants and 20 bars across both resorts — more dining options than any other Sandals destination.
  3. Sandals invested heavily in chef talent at Dunn’s River because they wanted this resort to become the food-forward Sandals. It worked. Repeat Sandals guests consistently rank Dunn’s River #1 for food.

If you’re a foodie couple weighing Sandals options, Dunn’s River is my first recommendation.

How Dining Works at Sandals Dunn’s River

Before I review each restaurant, here’s what’s included and how the system works:

What’s included with your all-inclusive stay:

  • Unlimited dining at all 12 restaurants on Dunn’s River property
  • Unlimited dining at all 16 restaurants at Sandals Ochi (5-minute shuttle)
  • All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, late night at select venues)
  • Premium liquor brands at all restaurants
  • Wine pairings at fine-dining venues
  • 24-hour room service
  • All gratuities

What requires reservations: Some à la carte restaurants take advance reservations through the Sandals app or your butler (if you’re in a Butler-tier room). Walk-ins are possible most nights but reservations are recommended for Butch’s Chophouse, Bayside, Soy, and Schooners.

Dress codes: Most restaurants are Resort Casual (sundresses, polo shirts, dressy shorts okay). Fine-dining venues require Resort Evening (long pants for men, no flip-flops, collared shirts). No swimwear at any restaurant after 11am.

Dietary restrictions: Dunn’s River handles vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and most allergies well. Notify your butler or the restaurant host on arrival; the chef will adapt menu items.

All 12 Sandals Dunn’s River Restaurants Reviewed

I’ve ordered these from my personal favorites to “still excellent but lower priority” — but honestly, there isn’t a weak link in the lineup.

1. Bayside (Seafood) — My #1 Pick

Cuisine: Caribbean-influenced seafood
Vibe: Open-air, oceanfront, romantic
Reservation: Recommended

Bayside is positioned right on the water with views that compete with the food for attention. Standout dishes:

  • Lobster bisque with sherry and crème fraîche
  • Mahi-mahi with mango salsa and coconut rice
  • Snapper prepared in your choice of three preparations
  • Surf and turf featuring local Caribbean lobster

This is where I’d plan a special-occasion dinner — anniversary, birthday, or honeymoon “wow” night. The combination of food quality and setting is unmatched at any Sandals.

Pro tip: Book around 6:30-7pm to catch sunset over the water.

2. Soy (Asian Fusion) — Most Underrated

Cuisine: Pan-Asian (Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese influences)
Vibe: Modern, dimly lit, intimate
Reservation: Recommended

Soy is genuinely underrated because it doesn’t get the marketing attention of Butch’s or Bayside. Standout dishes:

  • Tuna tataki with ponzu and sesame
  • Pad thai with hand-cut rice noodles
  • Vietnamese pho that goes hard for an all-inclusive
  • Tempura that’s actually crispy (rare at all-inclusives)

The sushi here is hand-rolled and fresh — better than most US suburban sushi restaurants. If you love Asian food, eat at Soy at least twice during your stay.

3. Butch’s Chophouse (Steakhouse)

Cuisine: American steakhouse
Vibe: Dark wood, leather banquettes, classic upscale
Dress: Resort Evening
Reservation: Highly recommended

Butch’s is a Sandals signature concept, and the Dunn’s River version is one of the strongest. Standout dishes: tomahawk ribeye (massive, share-able cut), filet mignon with béarnaise, surf and turf with cold-water lobster tail, and Wagyu options depending on availability. The wine program at Butch’s is the strongest at Dunn’s River. Honest note: Butch’s books up first. Reserve early.

4. Toscana (Italian)

Northern Italian. Casual-elegant, warm lighting. Walk-in usually fine. Hits the classic Italian notes well — pasta is hand-rolled, parmigiana is generous, tiramisu is house-made. Standout: lobster ravioli with saffron cream, osso buco with risotto Milanese, and margherita pizza from the wood-fired oven. Good “lighter night” choice.

5. Cucina Romana (Italian Trattoria-style)

Casual Italian / Roman comfort. Toscana’s casual cousin — pizza, simple pastas, roasted chicken. Standout: cacio e pepe that respects the simple Roman tradition, margherita pizza (yes, two pizza spots — both excellent), and saltimbocca. Best for a quick lunch after a beach morning.

6. Bombay Club (Indian)

Modern Indian. Colorful, music-forward, lively. Reservation recommended. Bombay Club is one of Sandals’ most underappreciated brand-wide concepts. Standout dishes: chicken tikka masala (the version that converts skeptics), lamb rogan josh, butter chicken with house-made naan, and vegetarian thali for the full Indian experience.

7. Le Petit Bistro (French)

French bistro classics. Quiet, refined, Parisian-feel. Resort Evening dress code. Reservation recommended. Standout: beef bourguignon, coq au vin, steak frites with béarnaise, and crème brûlée to finish. Wine pairings here are strong — French selections with each course included.

8. El Sabor (Mexican)

Mexican-Latin American. Casual, vibrant. Walk-in fine. Standout: carne asada tacos with house-made tortillas, guacamole prepared tableside, and margaritas that drink dangerously well. Best for a casual lunch or relaxed early dinner.

9. Schooners (Casual Beach Grill)

Burgers, jerk chicken, casual Caribbean. Beachfront, casual, walk-up. Walk-in only. Schooners is the lunch-and-late-night spot. After a morning of water sports, walk over for a jerk chicken sandwich and a Red Stripe. The food is casual but executed well — the jerk chicken is genuinely good, not the “tourist version” you sometimes get.

10. The Bus Station Diner (American Diner)

American diner (breakfast, burgers, milkshakes). Retro Americana, fun. Walk-in only. Surprisingly fun and genuinely good food. Standout: pancakes and waffles for breakfast, cheeseburgers that hit the diner-burger note, and milkshakes (alcoholic options for adults). Best for a casual breakfast or a “we don’t want a sit-down dinner” night.

11. Lovers Rock (Rooftop Lounge with Tapas)

Small plates, tapas, light dining. Rooftop, sunset-focused, cocktail-driven. Walk-in fine. Lovers Rock is more lounge than restaurant — perfect for a pre-dinner cocktail and shared tapas. The view is the draw. Standout: charcuterie boards, Mediterranean small plates, and one of the best cocktail menus on property. Best at sunset.

12. The Coffee Shop (Coffee, Pastries, Light Bites)

For morning coffee, an afternoon pastry, or a quick sandwich between activities. Solid espresso program, good pastries baked on property.

Plus 16 More Restaurants at Sandals Ochi (5 Minutes Away)

Don’t forget — your stay at Dunn’s River includes full access to all 16 restaurants at Sandals Ochi, just 5 minutes away by complimentary shuttle. Highlights at Ochi worth the trip:

  • Valentino’s (Italian) — different feel from Toscana, worth experiencing
  • Tokyo Joe (Japanese teppanyaki) — entertaining table-side cooking
  • Soy at Ochi (different menu from Dunn’s River’s Soy)
  • Speakeasy at Ochi — the Caribbean’s first speakeasy bar

If you stay 7+ nights, plan at least 2-3 dinners over at Ochi to maximize variety.

How to Plan Your Dining Week

Here’s how I usually advise clients on a 7-night Dunn’s River stay:

  • Night 1 — Arrival, casual: Schooners or Bus Station Diner.
  • Night 2 — Discovery: Toscana or Cucina Romana.
  • Night 3 — Special: Bayside (book sunset slot).
  • Night 4 — Adventure: Soy. The underrated favorite.
  • Night 5 — Cross-resort: Take the shuttle to Ochi, try Tokyo Joe or Valentino’s.
  • Night 6 — Romance: Le Petit Bistro or Bombay Club.
  • Night 7 — Big finish: Butch’s Chophouse with the tomahawk ribeye.

Restaurant Reservation Tips

  1. Make Butch’s and Bayside reservations as soon as you arrive.
  2. If you have a Butler, use them — butlers can get you into restaurants that show “fully booked” on the app.
  3. The 7pm slots fill first. Try 6pm or 8pm for easier reservations.
  4. No-show fees don’t apply at Sandals, but please cancel if you can’t make it.

How Dunn’s River Food Compares to Other Sandals Resorts

Here’s my honest ranking based on dining only across all 17 Sandals:

  1. Sandals Dunn’s River — 12 on-property + 16 at Ochi = most variety; newest kitchens; strongest chef talent
  2. Sandals Saint Vincent — 12 restaurants; newest globally; strong execution
  3. Sandals Royal Barbados (+Sandals Barbados) — Combined 21 restaurants; strong steakhouse; Bombay Club excellent
  4. Sandals Grande St. Lucian (+nearby Halcyon, La Toc) — 12 + access to 15 more = solid variety
  5. Sandals Royal Bahamian — 11 restaurants, very polished

Summary: If food is your top priority, Dunn’s River wins. Saint Vincent is a strong second.
